It’s 8 am on a weekday. You have an appointment to get to that you can’t keep rescheduling! Your toddler is being a toddler, messy, getting into just about anything he can get his hands on, you know being a kid. Your morning would go a lot smoother if you could keep your little Mr. busy hands entertained so you can just get the 10 minutes you need to finish getting ready.
Girl, whatever that time looks like for you, I get it. It’s hard to juggle so many things for us mamas. Take the time to make a plan, you will thank yourself later.
Kids are little chaotic creatures. Believe me, I totally understand it if I see you in the Emergency room for the fifth time in 3 short months because your kids decided it would be fun to bull fight or have an epic throw down in the living room and someone gets knocked out. These are both true stories brought to you by my life, there is truly never a dull moment. Since I have had kids, I have gasped probably about a million times. Real Talk! But I am no longer surprised when one of them gets banged up. With 5 rowdy boys like mine, it’s normal. If you come to my house you shouldn’t even let your guard down with my 2-year-old, I think he’s is the roughest of the bunch.
I like to try and avoid all the mishaps that can happen with kids. Although I know they will still happen there are some ways we can help keep our kids busy while we cook dinner, get ready, or while we’re trying to get some work done.
Let’s make a plan for when you need to keep your toddler, and even older kids busy. I’m throwing older kids into the mix too because I have 7-year-old twins, a 5-year-old, 4-year-old, and 2-year-old. Can you understand why I NEED to be prepared when it comes to keeping these boys busy?

Here are a few ideas that work well with my kids.
1. ART SUPPLIES
We keep art supplies on hand all the time! Include items like crayons or these colored pencils, construction paper, these cute coloring pads, glue sticks, pom poms, and popsicle sticks, these are only $1.95 and you get 120 colored popsicle sticks. My kids love coloring and creating fun pieces. I like to keep toilet paper rolls and add them to our supplies too. They can use them to create superheroes, telescopes, or butterflies, and other fun things their imagination can build up.
I also found this post here where this blogger shares how you can premake 20 busy activity bags for your little ones for 5 bucks. She includes a round up of different activities your child can do with the busy bags. I really enjoyed it so I know you will too and it’s a quick read.
2. SOMETHING TO BUILD WITH
Giving your kids something to built their own creations out of works really well. I bought my little one these building blocks and his older brothers love to build with him too. It keeps them very entertained and helps build my youngest son’s motor skills. We also have Legos for them, and they could literally build for hours with them!
Don’t feel like you have to run out and buy them if you’re strapped for cash because there are so many other options that you already have at home. I’ve let my kids stack up pots and pans before or use the pots as drums.
You can also save your yogurt containers for them to stack and build with. Sometimes the simplest things will carry their imagination and keep them busy. My kids loved playing with yogurt containers, they love seeing how high they can stack them.
3. IMAGINATION SESSION
I know this sounds silly but having your kids explore their imagination is one of the greatest things you can do for them. No limits, let it soar! Set story lines, put them in a bowl and let them pick one when you need them to keep them busy for a bit. We keep costumes from Halloween in a basket along with Nerf Guns, light sabers, and swords they can use to bring their imagination play to life.

I have these amazingly crafted rockers from Rockabye.com they are perfect for imagination play and awesome for keeping my toddler entertained. They were so kind to give me two rockers to try out. I knew I had struck gold as soon as I took the rockers out. My 2-year-old and 4-year-old old jumped right on them and would not get off! It was so nice to hear their little giggles as they played together. Another great plus to them are the songs they play. They call it Rock n’ Learn, you press the shape that is sewn into the fabric and songs play! I thought that was so neat.
COLT PONY ROCKER
DUMPEE THE TRUCK PLAY N’ ROCK
They also make great baby shower gifts. I am sending the Colt Pony Rocker to my sister for her new sweet baby boy. They make great gifts for mom and baby. We really love these rockers so much so I know you will. They are such a fun and unique toy. There are so many different rocker styles to choose from you just have to check them out. I loved this little girl’s Unicorn Rocker here, it is just so darn cute!
4. ROCK OUT!
We love all different kinds of music and one of our favorite things to do it praise the Lord through songs! I like to put on Pandora, we listen to the Tobymac station (It’s our FAVORITE station!). The kids basically sing and dance in the living room which works out well for me because it’s also getting all the ants out of their pants! Then everyone is calm and chill.
5. SCREEN TIME
I know so many parents worry about how much tv time their kids get, I do too. But letting them get some screen time isn’t going to be the end of the world or make you a horrible parent. I do however limit the mind numbing ridiculous cartoon shows and commercials that they play on tv now a days. I went as far as cutting cable because I don’t need tv influencing my children to act like brats. This mama does not play those games! And also because cable can get ridiculously expensive.
There are so many alternatives to cable and the kinds of shows your kids can watch. We use Netflix and they have quite a bit of educational shows on there. We are for sure a documentary watching family. It grabs my children’s attention way better than cartoons. Children have such an urge to learn and absorb all they can. Netflix also offers educational shows like The Magic School Bus, Super Why, Bill Nye The Science Guy, Leapfrog word shows, and more.
There are also apps you can get to help keep them entertained and are still great learning tools for them. We bought two Nabi tablets for our little ones and love the learning games that they offer. I’m linking to the tablet here in case you are want to take a look at it but we bought ours from Best Buy and I would suggest you buy from them. I have never bought one through Amazon.
I hope you enjoyed this list. Let me know about the things you do to help keep your kids busy in the comment section below. I would love to learn any new tips.
