I wanted to share a little trick I do with my kids that really takes the whining out of homework time. Have you had this problem? I have 5 boys and I just won’t tolerate it. Can you blame me? There are 5 boys running around my house! Sometimes I don’t even know how I have survived this long.
My twins are 7 and know that after school it’s homework time. One of the assignments I have them do to practice their spelling words for the week is to write each word out 3 times. It’s not their favorite thing in the world but it helps.
I don’t know if they got to comfortable with Summer vacation or what? But, boy were they incredibly whiny about homework and I couldn’t deal with it! Did I mention I don’t do well with whinny kids?
Anyways, this is what I did and it worked!
For every whine that I heard I added 2 more times that they had to write out a spelling word. It worked and I was so surprised. I ran with it and now I find myself using it for more that just homework.
One of my sons doesn’t like to take time out to tie his shoes and it is so frustrating! Today I stopped him and we took time out of our day together to tie his shoes.
I then explained to him that I expect him to tie his shoes everyday and that for every time I have to remind him I was going to take 5 minutes away from his video game privileges. His eyes got really big, and he knew I meant business!
Find something that your children aren’t very fond of then use it.
You could give them extra chores or take minutes off playing a video game. They see what you are doing and they won’t like it. They see this as a consequence to their actions so naturally they will want to shy away from it. I also give them options and I’ve found that works well too because it helps them learn from their actions and the choices they make.
It’s almost like an, “Oh Crap!” moment.
Kids just don’t like time taken away from their fun.
I’m a mother of 5 boys and it gets really tough sometimes. My husband works a lot right now and it’s up to me to make sure these boys have some “Act Right” in them!
